I think I can safely say, it’s been one hell of a first half of the year! Between a global pandemic, a recession (if not depression), murders, the long overdue arrival of anti-racism and mass protests alongside all our own personal shit. I don’t think many of us are unscathed to some degree.

But, for the purposes of this post I’m going to concentrate on how the world affects one just thing: goals.

(For more on my anti-racist stance and commitments see this post)

And now, on to the goals.

I don’t know about you but I’m a little off kilter when it comes to all the things I intended to accomplish at the start of this year.

There’s a feeling of helplessness in seeing all the suffering around us. Of pointlessness in the face of so much death.

But the cold reality is the world keeps turning and for those of us who are lucky enough to have been so far healthy and live in circumstances where we don’t have to contend with immense death life is going on.

Don’t get me wrong there have been plenty of times during the last few months where I haven’t wanted to even think about productivity. And other times where I’ve felt intense pressure to get all the things done. Now!

When I’ve encountered these days (oh, okay, weeks 😉) I’ve tried to chivvy or calm myself by asking two questions:

How will I feel when all this is over if I haven’t made any progress?

And

Is that how I want to feel?

The answer, whatever it is, is usually enough to get me into gear.

So with that in mind I’m participating in this month’s Camp NaNoWriMo again with my newly revised goals front of mind.

  • Edit last November’s play
  • Tackle the follow up to my first 5000 words in my novel.

If I get both of these done, that’ll be awesome.

If only manage one, that’ll be awesome.

And if I only manage some of one, that’ll be awesome too.

It’s all a work in progress.
